Social Media and Christianity
One of the downfalls of social media, especially in the realm of Twitter and Tumblr, is that the short nice-sounding quotes, sayings and bits are the ones that are going to be retweeted/reblogged/reposted. While I don’t want to downplay the powerful truths these 140-character-messages are conveying, we have to admit that they lack the depth of an explanation. Especially with the verse system in our modern Bibles, it’s easy to post those uplifting verses, further perpetuating the lack of discipline in reading Scripture in context and missing the message of an entire passage and book of the Bible. When we build our theologies on random sayings and verses without context, what does that say about us?
It pains me to see people, especially on Tumblr, write out well-thought out and careful posts, only to be lost in the flood of one-liners and the 10000th reblog of the same verse in aesthetically pleasing font (I swear I’ve seen “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” in a thousand different ways). We need to fight our social media attention that only lasts for one paragraph. Our faith is more than just nice sayings and one-off verses; it’s a story caught within the metanarrative of God’s reconciliation of the world to Himself. It’s a story that requires us to read, ponder, struggle and apply to live in the Kingdom that is here and is to come. And it’s going to take a lot more than one-liners to fully understand this Kingdom.
We need to stop recycling other people’s posts on faith and start exploring and expounding our own.

I concur, however, I am interested in your persistent usage of male pronouns regarding god. Knowing you, you’ve clearly encountered the debate, so im wondering what led you to land on that side?

Is it ironic for me to reblog or “recycle” this? I think so. But I like it.

I’m tempted to reblog out of spite for that second paragraph ;) Really good though, as usual.
